Books & Books

This novel is written with the character and tone of of Latin American magical realism, a popular writing style in the late 20th century.

“Viva el Obispo ¡Carajo!” is a passionate and amusing novel that criticizes the excess of religious fervor in Latin America with a touch of humor.

Caicedo paints a full-length portrait of the conflict which afflicts Villa del Príncipe, a town consumed by panic in the face of an unexpected and inexplicable series of natural deaths.

On one side, there are the bewildered citizens trying to find the threads that connect the here and now with the beyond. On the other side are those who control the political and economic power and who therefore are assumed to be the interpreters of the celestial designs.

Who is responsible for the natural deaths? In the feverish search for those responsible, a conflict is ignited between the devoted women from above and the dancers from below, an encounter so complex and entangled that it requires the miraculous intervention of the Bishop.
